Power Steering Pump Problems?

About Power Steering Pump Pulley Problems

Before the 1950s, drivers needed to work a little harder to maneuver their vehicles. Luckily, your power steering system makes it simple to turn or keep your car driving straight.

To keep your car driving at its best, you need to take good care of your power steering system. If you fail to do so, you may experience a slow steering response, groaning sounds, and a stiff steering wheel.

One essential component of the power steering system you must maintain is the power steering pump pulley. But what is it, and how do you know if your needs repair?

Luckily, the auto repair experts at First Tire & Automotive in First Colony – Sugar Land, Texas, are here to explain everything you need to know.

What is a Power Steering Pump Pulley?

The power steering pulley drives power to the steering pump. Your pulley may be connected to one or two belts, depending on what type of vehicle you own. These belts wrap around the pulley, spinning it when the engine is on. When you turn your car off, the pulley stays still, and the pump stops working.

As with all of the other pulleys in your engine, the power steering pump pulley needs a bearing to operate efficiently. Over time, this bearing will wear out and need to be replaced.

Do I Need a New Pulley?

If your power steering pump pulley starts to fail, you may notice that your vehicle’s steering will be reluctant to respond. It may also respond excessively. You may notice a burning odor coming from underneath your hood. This is caused by the belts rubbing against the pulley, causing excess heat and friction.

Another symptom of a failing power steering pump pulley is grinding or whining noises or tight steering. If your vehicle is displaying any of these symptoms, call our team of ASE-certified mechanics today.
